What is a Bar/ Bat Mitzvah?

A Bar/ Bat Mitzvah is a significant spiritual milestone in the life of a Jewish young person. It represents years of study and preparation and marks a child’s assumption of religious responsibility. The Bar/ Bat Mitzvah will usually lead some prayers, read from the Torah, recite a Haftarah , and give a speech in English. Family members will also be honored by coming up to the Torah during the service.

We are looking forward to having your child as a guest in our synagogue as we celebrate this important time. The following guidelines will help you and your child feel comfortable in the synagogue.

  1. The Sabbath morning services begin promptly at 10 AM and concludes at noon.
  2. Your child will be expected to remain in the sanctuary and display proper behavior and respect during the service.
  3. It is expected that all cell phones and electronics will be silenced during the service.
  4. Please see to it that your child dresses respectfully for religious services. Jeans or T-shirts, spaghetti-straps, tank tops, or crop-tops, are not appropriate.
